The Wall Street Journal reported some new details about the long-rumored Google music service, this time with a tasty Android twist.Google’s plan, it seems, is to launch a download service first — one that is tied to the company’s search engine — and then to progress to an online subscription service by 2011. The ultimate goal is to have a cloud-based subscription service that could stream directly to Android-based devices. While rumors and reports about Google formally entering the music sales or subscriptions space have been ongoing for years, this time the talk might be for real. In October, Google launched its music discovery search features. At the time, we discussed its implications on the music business as a whole.

Miracles do happen: although the official European launch date for the iPad is tomorrow, May 28, at least one customer from the UK got his iPad a day early.Apparently, the UPS delivery person said “I swear the launch was today,” and delivered the iPad to the workplace of one lucky Stephen, located in Hatfield Heath, Essex.Interestingly enough, recently the shipping date for the iPad in Apple’s UK online store changed from “May 28″ to “June 7″ and then to “June.” However, it seems that the customers who pre-ordered their iPads on the 10th or 11th of May can expect Apple to keep their promise of delivering the device on May 28, and – at least in one case – even a day early.

Google’s forthcoming digital bookstore, Google Editions, will launch in June or July of this year, Google’s Manager for Strategic Partner Development Chris Palma told The Wall Street Journal. The service will sell e-books on the web just like Amazon’s Kindle store or Apple’s iBooks.Editions was originally slated for release in the first half of 2010 but that didn’t pan out, apparently.As many as 500,000 books could be included, pulled from the partners with whom Google already made deals for its Google Books search engine (previously called “Google Print” and “Google Book Search”). The books can be downloaded via web browser and will presumably not be tied to any particular device or platform.

The U.S. Department of Justice has been making a few calls to record labels to ask some pointed questions about iTunes.According to several reports, the DoJ’s antitrust division has reached out to Universal, Sony, Warner Bros, EMI and several music services that compete with iTunes, such as eMusic. Feds have been asking preliminary questions about Apple’s pricing and competition, particularly with regard to Amazon’s music store.There are some concerns that Apple may be unfairly manipulating certain companies into not working with Amazon. Not long ago, Apple removed certain featured items from iTunes when the parent company selling them defected to Amazon for other promotions, namely Amazon’s “Deal of the Day.”
