Hi guys, Very basic question (I hope!) - I'm kinda new to managing domain names and servers. I have a domain name with one host (123 Reg) and a virtual server (with Demon.net) - I want to point the domain name to the virtual server. Do I need to change the domain name's DNS Settings, the Nameservers or both? What is the difference between these? Thanks in advance for any help! -iron

Handling Permissions When Moving Sites
Question!
I'm moving about a dozen websites from one server to another. (Side note: 1and1 VPS is NOT actually a virtual server. Hence, I have to move all our sites off of it.)
We have .Net and PHP web sites. I'm manually checking and updating permissions as best I can. However, I wasn't involved in the development of all of these sites. Since these are two entirely different Windows servers and they don't belong to the same domain, I have to go through and add write permissions to certain folders for the CMS apps, etc to work (even if they were on the same domain, I might have had to do this anyway).
Is there a quicker or better way?
Thanks!How do I point a sub-directory to another server ?
Hi,
How can I have a sub-directory under a domain point to another server, for example loading http://www.example.com/myscript/ should load the script located on a different server than xyz.com, this can be achieved via using a sub-domain but I need to avoid that.
example.com - loads from server 1
example/myscript/ - loads from another server 2
I am using litespeed. One domain on Windows and Linux Server
Hi guys, please forgive my ignorance, I hope this is the right place to post...
Heres the story. I have had my domain hosted on a Windows server for over a year, recently I installed Joomla and within a few minutes I started to get permission errors. Being the type of person that I am I tried to solve this myself, yes I do find these things interesting :)
Anywho... after a while I learnt that Windows servers on this host did not have the libraries or the ability to host Joomla....
I called the host and they promtply informed me to upgrade to a multiple host service, which I did.
Getting an additional domain name
So our current domain name is the brand name (these are made up):
www.speedster.co.nz
but we just purchased this additional domain because it contains the keywords that we're targeting:
www.fastgocarts.co.nz
For SEO, what is the best way to point the new domain to the main domain? attached is a picture of the options my host control panel gives me... is cloacking or redirection best?
Apache httpd.conf help answer a question please.
I would be ashamed to admit how much time I have wasted on this "simple" issue. :xhttp://domain.com/ does work
http://www.domain.com/ does not work at all:
"Server not found"
I was able to install a SSL cert and get it working with no browser warnings, but I can't even use tutorials to figure this basic problem out:
Code:
<VirtualHost 101.9.xx.50:80>
DocumentRoot "/var/www/html/domain.com"
ServerName www.domain.com
ServerAlias domain.com *.domain.com
<Directory "/var/www/html/domain.com">
allow from all
Options +Indexes
</Directory>Virtual Server, same nameservers will this affect SEO
Ive just had to upgrade to a virtual server and Ive been told by the hosts that I can set the dns nameserver and use this for all my domains without any problem. lot of my sites link together and I know having the same IP address can affect the link quality, on other words my links to my site is better f its a different IP address. If I use the same nameservers for all my domains will this have any adverse effects?Domain name has been stolen!
I've got a fellow tech whose non-expired workplace domain name has been stolen from register.com.
Any advice?
Quote:
I registered a domain name through register.com
we use it for our exchange email service last week we started having a problem receiving emails after doing a whois I could see that the email name server was wrong
I'm the only one with access to the domain management settings so I have no idea how they got changed, even worse when I tried to access the site to change it back it tells me domain name not found!
I call register.com and they tell me that the domain name was done through a reseller, and they cant do anything for me because I didnt have direct access to it.
